Session 2: History, Identity, and Us

A summer series on identity and heritage

Have you ever thought about how much history, and its baggage, shapes who you are today? What does it mean to carry the weight of colonization, partition, and migration as part of your identity, whether or not you lived it yourself?

Join SAAFC and the South Asian Heritage Fund for the second session of our Third Space summer series. This session falls on the weekend marking 79 years of independence from British colonial rule for India and Pakistan. Together we will look at the role history plays in how we understand ourselves, our families, and our communities today.

Whether you grew up steeped in this history or are just beginning to untangle it, this space is for you.

Finding Our Rhythm

Movement. Identity. Community.

What if dance wasn’t about getting the steps right? What if it was about moving together, meeting new people, feeling more comfortable in your body, and finding joy in community?

A three-part desi dance series built for people to find their community in dance. Some familiarity with Indian pop or Bollywood dance helps, but no formal training is required. We will explore movement, build confidence, and create a welcoming environment for people who do not always feel represented in traditional dance spaces.

  • No prior performance experience needed
  • All identities, body types, and cultures welcome
  • An English-language guide to the Hindi and Punjabi lyrics
  • Optional culminating performance at the SAAFC Fall Event
